Don’t Get Down — 5 Reasons for Opportunity in 2009

by Chad Levitt

Tough times create opportunity. In this post I’m going to share with you 5 reasons why 2009 will be filled with opportunities for those who aren’t afraid to do something different.

We live in a new world where the boundaries have been erased and are free to be exploited by anyone who has the guts to go get what they want. As 2009 plays out two very different stories will emerge. The first story will be about the bad economy, the whiners and how it’s forcing companies out of business. The second story will be about the businesses and people that are thriving.

In 2009 don’t be a whiner be a thriver.

5 Reasons Why 2009 Is Filled With Opportunity

1.) Lack of leadership

Businesses are run by people and most of the people running companies today don’t understand how to compete in a new world. All the companies that go out of business in 2009 deserve it. Sorry folks, that’s capitalism and in capitalism if you don’t deliver you shouldn’t be in business.

Most of the current leadership is old school and doesn’t understand the web, social media and how to use it to create value. This is an opportunity for you to show them how.

2.) Lack of imagination

We live in a copy-cat economy and many companies have copied their competitors right down the drain. The ability to think for yourself and create something of your own will be rewarded in 2009. Don’t be scared to do something different because it could be your ticket to true happiness and riches.

Most people are followers. Don’t be one. Think for yourself and use your imagination to create something new, improve a process or do something different. Then when you find “that something” go tell the world about it through social media.

3.) Challenges, Challenges, Challenges

There are many challenges that are waiting for solutions to be found. If you are experiencing a challenge, chances are that many others are too. The solutions to these challenges will be the seeds of future success.

I’m not talking about solving global warming or finding more environmentally friendly energy sources. Although, that will work too. The solutions we need can be as small as finding better ways to help your company sell more and then sharing it with everyone in the sales organization. Every challenge presents an opportunity.

4.) Social Media

The gatekeepers have been removed from the equation for you with social media platforms. The uses of social media are endless and can help you achieve your goals. The common theme running through the success stories of the people that are crushing it in a bad economy is their use of Social Media.

5.) People are scared

In tough times weak people hide, blame others and fall off their game. They waste time waiting for things to get better and never think of trying harder or doing something new. Nothing good has ever come of being scared, it just makes you stupid. Don’t be scared, get after it, do something different and keep trying until something works.
This is the mindset that has always won and will win in 2009.

Now, it’s your turn. What are some of the reasons you believe 2009 is filled with opportunity? Please, leave a comment below.
