In this post I interview Neil Patel a very successful entrepreneur and author of the renowned Quicksprout blog. He shares how he uses Social Media to increase his opportunities and drive sales for his 3 internet companies ACS, Crazy Egg and KISSmetrics.

You’ve had a tremendous amount of success. How has social media helped you attain the level of success that you have?
Social media is probably the main reason for my success. Through social media I was able to spread my knowledge across the web and get more eyeballs to my blog. After a while I become good at leveraging these social sites which got me speaking spots at conferences and into newspapers like the Wall Street Journal.
You’re the creator of Crazy Egg, which has been a tremendous hit. How has social media and Sales 2.0 technology helped you create awareness for Crazy Egg and drive sales?
The main reason Crazy Egg has been a hit is because of all the blogosphere coverage we got. Through the blogosphere we created a lot of buzz which helped bring in sales. The key to getting blogosphere coverage is to make sure you have relationships with bloggers so that they are willing to write on your company. If you don’t know any influential bloggers you may want to consider hiring a public relations specialist or you could email a few bloggers and start to get to know them.
How has creating and writing a blog helped you to expand your network and create more opportunities for you?
If you can write good content on your blog you will attract readers. The more readers you can get to your blog, the more peopleĀ will know about you. This helps you anytime you want to launch a company or need help because you can publish a message to everyone of your readers.
Another thing that you can do to expand your network is to add a contact page to your blog so that people can contact you. Although you may get flooded with emails, it is great because people will be able to bring opportunities to you.
Did you immediately see the value in social media or did you think it was more of a fad that would pass with time?
I didn’t see the opportunity until I saw others leverage it. I then noticed that people were getting tons of traffic and links from social sites like Digg so I figured out how to leverage it. I never really thought of the social web as a fad, but I did see it as a big time sinker initially.
What is your favorite social media platform and how does it help you connect with your network?
My favorite social sites are Facebook and Twitter. Through these sites anyone can easily communicate with others and spread the word on something important to them. Other social sites like Digg or StumbleUpon are a bit more difficult to leverage while Facebook and Twitter can be leveraged by anyone.
Neil is a fantastic example of how using Social Media can increase your business and create incredible opportunities!
