@Dave: Right on -- social media can shorten the sales cycle and open up the top of the funnel. The end result is more leads that even at the same conversion ratio will translate to more revenue. The true magic is when you open up the funnel and increase conversion ratios of leads to paying customers. Your example is a great point on how people rely on their social networks for trusted information -- this trend will strengthen in the years ahead. Keep reading and sharing!

I've seen this video before and it's great. Social media has shortened the sales funnel. People in networked markets have figured out that they get more and better information and support from one another than from you. (Thesis #11 in Cluetrain Manifesto, written over ten years ago).

Case to point: I recently bought a new automatic dishwasher. When I visited the appliance dealership the pre-sales conversation consisted of four words: "I want that one". Why? because my social media network provided me with all the information I needed to select the dishwasher and dealer.
